5 Safety Tips for Painting an Indoor Room

A fresh coat of paint is a great way to add new life into a drab bedroom, office, or commercial space for spring. Residential and commercial painting in Wayne, PA, are both relatively low-risk property improvement jobs, but there are a few steps you should take to ensure your safety. Use these five tips to avoid injury and breathing problems while painting indoors.

  • Make sure the room is well-ventilated. Open all of the doors and windows of the room that you want to paint and leave them open while you work on the job and after it’s finished. Don’t let anyone loiter or sleep in a freshly painted room, especially children and pets.
  • Wear a protective mask while painting. If the room you’re painting can’t be properly ventilated, wear a protective respirator mask. Take frequent breaks outdoors for fresh air and stop painting if you start to feel lightheaded or dizzy.
  • Wear protective gear while sanding. If you’re painting furniture or built-in structures, you may need to do some sanding before you can begin. Always wear protective safety goggles and a respirator while sanding and keep your respirator on until dust particles settle.
  • Check your ladder before use. If you’re painting a room with high ceilings and you need to use a ladder, test it out beforehand. Place the ladder on a flat, even surface and test its strength by climbing up a few steps. While painting, remember to never step on the top of the ladder or the utility shelf.
  • Keep paint away from heat. Store paint away from indoor heat sources like fireplaces, water heaters, and space heaters. Never smoke while painting—alkyd paint compounds and thinners can be very flammable.
