Which Comes First: Interior Painting or New Cabinets?

A modern home kitchen with half of the cabinets painted yellow and the other half unpainted.

When it comes time for a home makeover, there are plenty of factors that you need to keep in mind. From the layout of any new furniture to the desired aesthetic based on modern trends, figuring out everything requires precise planning. One of the more important aspects is your interior painting projects — and when thinking about your kitchen, what you are doing with your wood cabinets will play a significant role.

While your professional painters won’t be the ones to put in your new cabinets, the order in which you undergo each process is going to affect the other. This factor begs the question that is likely on every Bucks County homeowner’s mind: does painting my cabinets come first, or should I have my walls painted ahead of time?

What’s Easier for the Painters?

Most painters do have a specific preference in mind — and that is to paint around the cabinets that are already installed. When your kitchen cabinets get installed, it is usually an involved process and not necessarily an easy job.

It’s similar to a construction job, and with that comes the risk of a few dings to your kitchen walls — which in turn will ruin the new paint color that you were so excited about. Additionally, you may complicate the installation process with coats of paint, potentially making the cabinets a tighter squeeze into their respective spots.

With that said, painting after your installation is not a hard and fast rule. For instance, painting first could save your contractor from having to avoid the new cabinets, as getting any brush strokes on the bare wood is not ideal for a home remodeling project.

Should Cabinets Be Painted First?

Redoing your kitchen doesn’t always mean that you are going to have an entirely new set of cabinets — maybe you just want to give them a new paint job and call it a day. So this presents a wholly new question that you will have to consider; do I paint my walls or my cabinets first?

From purely an aesthetic perspective, it might be a better idea to paint your kitchen cabinets before you paint the walls — and, in some cases, even before you’ve decided on which color you are going with for your walls. Once you see which color your cabinet doors and drawers will be and how they fit in with the rest of your kitchen, it could significantly impact what you want to do with the rest of the room. After all, you won’t want these colors to clash!
